Summer is hot and humid, but it's also Japan's festival season — fireworks, matsuri, and the liveliest streets of the year.
- 1Embrace the festivals. Gion Matsuri (Kyoto), Nebuta (Aomori), and hanabi fireworks make July-August unforgettable.
- 2Escape the heat at altitude or latitude. Hokkaido, the Japanese Alps, and Tohoku stay cool while Tokyo swelters.

What is the best month to visit Japan?
Late March to early April for cherry blossoms and October to November for autumn leaves are the consensus best windows — comfortable temperatures (15-25°C), manageable rain, and iconic scenery. If you want to avoid crowds, mid-to-late May and early October are excellent quieter alternatives.
When is the cheapest time to travel to Japan?
June and September are the cheapest months. June is the rainy season (tsuyu) and September carries typhoon risk, so prices drop 30-50%. For a bargain with good weather, early March and early December are strong compromises.
What is the worst time to visit Japan?
Three peaks to plan around: cherry blossom season (April) when hotels are 40-80% more expensive and sights are packed; Golden Week (late April to early May 5) when the entire country travels; and Obon (mid-August) plus the hot, humid summer. Is Japan crowded during Golden Week?
Extremely. Golden Week (around April 29 to May 5) is Japan's biggest travel peak — bullet trains sell out, hotels triple in price, and popular sights are mobbed. Travel just after May 5 instead and you'll have near-perfect weather with the crowds gone.
What is the weather like in Japan in October?
October is arguably Japan's best month: Tokyo averages 15-22°C with crisp, clear skies. Autumn colors begin in Hokkaido and the mountains, and humidity finally breaks. Early October is still warm; late October brings the first full-color maples.
Can I visit Japan during the rainy season?
The tsuyu rainy season (usually early June to mid-July in most of Honshu) brings weeks of drizzle and humidity. It's not a washout — hydrangeas bloom beautifully and prices are the year's lowest — but if you want sunshine, aim for after mid-July.
When is the best time for sakura (cherry blossoms)?
Cherry blossoms sweep north: Okinawa and Kyushu in late March, Tokyo and Kyoto around late March to early April, then Tohoku and Hokkaido through late April to early May. The forecast is published each year about two weeks in advance — chase the 'sakura front' for the best timing.
Do I need a visa to visit Japan?
Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, and 60+ other countries get visa-free entry for 90 days as tourists. You'll need a passport valid for your stay. For the latest rules, check your local Japanese embassy before booking.
Is Japan expensive?
Japan is cheaper than most people expect. Budget travelers can manage $60-90/day (capsules, convenience-store meals, regional rail passes). Mid-range is $150-250/day. The yen's recent weakness has made Japan one of the best-value destinations in the developed world.
How far in advance should I book?
International flights: 2-4 months ahead. Hotels: book 2-3 months ahead if you're traveling in sakura season, Golden Week, or summer; 3-4 weeks is fine otherwise. The Japan Rail Pass should be bought before you leave (it's now cheaper but only covers the classic passes).
