Hydrangea season, in the rain that makes it

June's rain is the point, not the problem. The tsuyu season (roughly June 5 to mid-July in most of Honshu) brings 12-14 rain days — the most of any month — and it's exactly what hydrangeas (ajisai) need. Meigetsuin in Kamakura is the classic: the temple's "hydrangea temple" garden is carpeted in blue, with the famous round window framing the view. Sanjusangendo's neighbor Mimuroto-ji in Kyoto and Hasedera in Kamakura are the quieter alternates. And photographers love this month — overcast skies mean soft, diffused light that flatters the flowers and the moss.

Hokkaido or Okinawa beat the rain

Two regions escape the tsuyu: Hokkaido, where June is cool, green and barely rained on (lavender starts budding in Furano), and Okinawa, whose beaches open pre-peak with calm seas and thin crowds. On Honshu, June is also the year's cheapest month — hotels sit 30-50% below spring rates and international flights bottom out, making it the best-value month on the calendar for flexible travelers.
