Overview
Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost main island and its least humid corner. Winters are harsh but legendary — the Sapporo Snow Festival and Niseko's light, dry powder draw skiers from around the world. Summers are gloriously mild, topping out around 25°C with long daylight hours. Spring arrives two to four weeks later than Tokyo, and autumn colors start earlier. It is the only place in Japan where you can ski powder in winter and hike cool green trails in July without the humidity that blankets the rest of the country.
