Nebuta Matsuri — three nights of fire and light

Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri (August 2-7) is Japan's most spectacular summer festival: enormous illuminated battle floats — some over 5 meters wide — carried through the streets on a wave of haneto dancers. The final night (August 7) is the grandest, and the floats are then loaded onto boats for the city's harbor festival. If you can't make Aomori, Tokushima's Awa Odori (August 12-15) is the country's biggest dance festival, with streets of choreographed dancers in coordinated costume. Both fill their cities' hotels months out — reserve by June, or base in nearby Sendai and take the shinkansen.

Mount Fuji's climbing season

August is the heart of Fuji's official climbing season (early July to mid-September), and the busiest — the Yoshida Trail queues near the summit with waits of 2-3 hours at popular points, and toilets at the eighth station routinely back up. The fix is to climb on a weekday and start so you reach the summit for sunrise, descending before the midday rush. Expect the mountain to be genuinely cold above the fifth station even in August — it hovers near freezing at the summit before dawn.
