Japan Weather in October 2026: Season, Crowds & Where to Go

The autumn front, region by region

Autumn color (koyo) follows a north-to-south front just like sakura, but more slowly: Hokkaido turns from late September, the Japanese Alps and Nikko follow in early-to-mid October, and Kyoto reaches full color in the second half of November. For October, the Alps are the prize — the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route opens its full length with first snow at the top and color below, and the 2,300-meter ridgelines above Hakone are at their crispest. Fog and morning mist are common over the valleys — photographers' gold, and the reason early starts win.

Perfect hiking, before the crowds

October is the consensus best hiking month in Japan: 13-21°C in the lowlands, dry, and with 10-11 hours of daylight. Nikko, Hakone, Mount Takao and the Fuji Five Lakes all offer day hikes with proper autumn light, and the trails are empty compared to November's temple circuits. It's also Halloween month — Shibuya's street party on October 31 draws huge crowds, fun to witness, painful to be in the middle of if you're heading anywhere else that night.
