September is Japan’s quietest bargain month most years — but 2026 has one thing that changes the calculus: Silver Week.
Silver Week is back — Sept 19-23
Respect for the Aged Day (3rd Monday) falls on September 21, and Autumnal Equinox Day falls on September 23. The single working day between them automatically becomes a holiday too, creating a rare 5-day national break. This has only happened twice before (2009, 2015) and won’t happen again until 2032 — expect domestic travel, trains, and hotels to spike Golden-Week-style for those five days specifically. Book Shinkansen and hotels well ahead if your trip overlaps Sept 19-23, and consider shifting flexible plans to before or after the window instead.
Hokkaido gets color first
Mount Asahidake in Daisetsuzan National Park is Japan’s earliest koyo (autumn foliage) spot every year, with the first reds typically appearing around mid-September and building through the month via the ropeway up to alpine terrain. Harvest season food
September through November is Japan’s harvest window: new-crop rice, the start of pear and grape season, and the first crab of the year in Hokkaido and the Sea of Japan coast. Regional food markets and izakaya menus shift noticeably this month if seasonal eating is part of why you’re visiting.
Watch the typhoon window
September is historically Japan’s peak typhoon month, with the highest risk along the southern coast, Okinawa, and Kyushu. It doesn’t rule out a trip, but it does mean flexible dates and travel insurance matter more this month than most. Check forecasts in the week before you fly and build a buffer day into any leg through the south.
Outside Silver Week, it’s genuinely a value month
